How to Prepare for a Virtual Job Interview via Zoom or Microsoft Teams
Treat the virtual interview as you would in real life
The use of Video Conferencing tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams to conduct job interviews is extremely common. Even more so when the Hiring Manager or Recruiter is overseas, interstate, or if the job you have applied for requires remote working. Whilst the perception may be that virtual interviews are less formal than face-to-face interviews, that misconception can actually impede your ability to be successful in the obtaining role. In order to increase your chances of being hired, ensure you prepare adequately and present professionally with the same level of effort as you would an on site interview.
Dress Professionally
Whilst virtual job interviews are not in person meetings, professional dress code is still key. The thought of dressing in a less formal manner can be tempting, especially if you are attending the virtual interview from your home, however, it’s important that you are sending the correct message and presentation is a vital factor in professionalism.
Test your device in advance to avoid any technical issues
Video conference meetings can often be fraught with technical difficulties. To ensure that your interview runs smoothly, test your device prior to joining, to ensure there are no video or sound issues.
Log in to the interview early
Just as you would follow interview etiquette in person and arrive for a job interview ten minutes early, virtual interviews should be treated with the same level of commitment. Being a few minutes early, set up and ready to go means that when the meeting organiser joins you are prepared and ready to start.
Ensure you are free from interruptions
Picking a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed is essential when attending a remote job interview. Ensure the location you choose is free from interruption, noise and that there is no radio or TV playing in the background that might cause distraction.
